Montana: Runner Up for 2008 State of the Year Award |
|
| Statistics for Montana focused on alternative energy
Business Facilities magazine recently announced their State of the Year Award.
The award is based on data submitted by states on their five largest
projects, measured by total capital investment and by creation of new
jobs. The winner for 2008 was Michigan.
Finishing
in second place was the State of Montana, with over $8.5-billion in
investment, creating some 5,000 new jobs. Most of Montana's new
projects revolved around the multifaceted energy industry, including a
coal-to-liquid facility, a crude oil pipeline, a coal mine and two new
wind power companies.

| Wrestling with Risk |
|
| Strategic Management - from CFO Magazine
Risk management is all the rage now -- due largely to its spectacular failures in the lead-up to the economic crisis.
Last
August, when Virgin Mobile CFO John Feehan spotted signs of looming
bankruptcy at Circuit City, a retail outlet for his company's cell
phones, he didn't sit idly by. Instead, Virgin Mobile tightened
billing terms, demanded cash payments, and adjusted shipments
daily. When Circuit City finally filed for bankruptcy in
November, the bad news did not leave Virgin Mobile stuck with a pile of
illiquid receivables.
A
survey finds that nearly 50% of CFOs plan to overhaul their
risk-management policies and practices, and many are looking for a
systematic approach. Modest IT improvements can help, but experts
warn that formal "enterprise risk management" plans will fail, if they
aren't integrated with the organization's culture.

| Filmmaker Ken Burns Creates New Documentary on Yellowstone National Park |
|
| From an article by Bozeman Daily Chronicle's Staff Writer, Gail Schontzler
Most Montanans figure they know all about Yellowstone Park,
yet filmmaker Ken Burns showed he's still a master storyteller who can
surprise even local audiences with the history of America's first
national park.
Recently,
an audience of about 700 at Bozeman's Emerson Theatre stood to applaud
and cheer after seeing a 50-minute sneak preview of the new 12-hour
Burns documentary "The National Parks - America's Greatest
Idea." It will air this Fall over six nights on PBS.

| From Harvard Business Review:
Why Good Leaders Make Bad Decisions |
|
Neuroscience reveals what distorts a leader's judgment. Here's how you can keep your own judgment clear.
Decision-making lies at the heart of our personal and professional lives.
Every day we make decisions. Some are small, domestic, and
innocuous. Others are more important, affecting people's lives,
livelihoods, and well-being. Inevitably, we make mistakes along
the way. The daunting reality is that enormously important
decisions made by intelligent, responsible people with the best
information and intentions are sometimes hopelessly flawed. Read more...

| Contacting Your Legislators |
|
|
At a teleconference which the Billings Chamber
held with a local area delegation, the question was asked about the
best method of contacting legislators. Overwhelmingly,
e-mail was the preferred method. They did caution that
because of the overwhelming number of e-mails that they get, it is
often difficult to respond to all of them. They give preference
to those who live in their district.
